MY COMMITMENT

As President of FABA I wish to express my great concern for the number of animals abandoned day after day. This causes a serious problem, for example, the unlimited breeding of strays, in addition to causing serious consequences such as bites, accidents, the transmission of zoonoses and other diseases, and environmental pollution due to animal droppings. Animal refuges, that only survive thanks to donations and the help of the public, are full of dogs and cats. Moving, a divorce, a sudden allergy to animal hair, the barking that bothers the neighbors, a puppy that has grown “too big”, an animal’s normal physiological functions... these are some of the many excuses for abandoning an animal in the street or in a refuge. The abandoned animal does not know it will never see its owner, the person that means so much to it, ever again. The abandoned animal ends up wandering in the street, round farms, on highways or is put down in some experimentation or anti-rabies center.

What can be done in the face of this total lack of sensibility?

In our Foundation we are committed to making the general population aware of the importance of protecting animals. To achieve this we support surgical spaying and the adoption of abandoned animals. We try to find homes for these animals that are in desperate need of affection. I become very sad when I see animals that people have “discarded”. The sad eyes and demeanor of these faithful friends that have been deprived of their human owners and their homes overcome me. It is time to stop acting irresponsibly towards “man’s best friend”. A domestic animal needs care and love till the day it dies. Never abandon it. The capacity to love is one of the great gifts of life.
